Dr.
Salman Gulzar, Assistant Professor at ISHU,
is visiting the School of Biological Sciences, Washington
State University, Pullman, USA. Funding for his
research was awarded through the HEC Post Doctoral
Scholarship (Phase V) Program. Dr. Gulzar is working
with Regents Professor Dr. Gerald Edwards
who is a world renowned authority on plant photosynthesis
. Over the last decade, research in his lab has
focused on plants from Central Asian deserts which
possess a mechanism of photosynthesis (C4) that
makes them better able to tolerate hot, dry and/or
saline soils. Dr. Salman Gulzar's interests in halophyte
diversity in coastal areas of Pakistan, including
the plants' photosynthesis, biochemistry, physiology
and structure under saline conditions, mesh very
well and the visit could be of benefit to both institutions.
He will also have the opportunity to interact with
students and postdoctoral fellows who are engaged
in various projects as well as senior researchers
like Prof. Elena Voznesenskaya, of the Komarov
Botanical Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia and
collaborating faculty such as Dr. Asaph Cousins.
