The Institute of Sustainable Halophyte
Utilization has been set up as the direct successor
of the Halophyte Biology Laboratory, Department of
Botany, University of Karachi, with the help of University
of Karachi and funding from the Higher Education Commission,
Islamabad. As the name implies, the research at the
Institute aims specifically at developing and commercializing
the efficient use of indigenous halophyte wealth for
the benefit of local people in the vicinity of degraded
land with poor quality brackish and saline water sources.
The developments and innovations in the introduction
of unconventional crops will be linked to industry
to be adopted by farmers in the coastal areas of Sindh
and Balochistan.
